With increasing legislative and societal pressures placed on industry in response to climate change, increased efficiency of energy usage in the form of process integration is an area of growing interest and active research. One specific area wherein potential for increases in efficiency and consequent energy savings has been identified is that of Heat Exchange Networks. Such networks are common through industrial settings, and represent a significant portion of energy usage. While methods such as Pinch Analysis have been applied to such systems for the purpose of retrofitting for reduced energy wastage, there remains a lack of general tools and automated solutions that can be easily applied to derive solutions across different operational contexts. As such, the exploration of existing approaches and the development of accessible tools is of great relevance for industries that find themselves facing necessary change.
