Postgraduate Diploma (Computer Science) (PGDip(CompSc))

The Postgraduate Diploma (Computer Science) (PGDip(CompSc)) is a professional qualification for graduates with a strong background in computing. It is particularly suitable if you are working in areas related to computing and wish to bring your expertise up to date with developments in this fast changing field. For example, you might want to update your computer science degree in some area of specialisation, or you might seek further study on a topic that you were not able to cover adequately in your first degree. The Postgraduate Diploma program is particularly suitable for people who are not able to commit the two-year period required for the MSc programme. It normally takes one year of full-time study, but can also be taken part-time over an extended period. With an appropriate choice of 120 points of papers at 500 level and excellent performance in them, good students may be permitted to transfer straight into the second year of the MSc programme after completing the PGDip(CompSc) requirements.

If you wish to have more information on the diplomas, please contact the Department of Computer Science.

Degree Regulations
The regulations which govern the awarding of the Postgraduate Diploma are published in the University Calendar.

You must gain at least 120 points at 500 level with at least 90 points in Computer Science.

We can advise you whether your computer science knowledge is adequate for completing the Postgraduate Diploma in one year, or whether your background is such that you should study for it over a longer period. It is essential that you contact us well before your intended start date as the details of programmes must be individually tailored, and this may take some time.

Entry Requirements
To enrol for the PGDip(CompSc) you should have completed a Bachelors degree in computer science or computer engineering and your knowledge has to be suitable for entry to our papers.

The PGDip(CompSc) is not intended for people with other qualifications or degrees in other subjects.

Enrolment Information
To enrol for a Postgraduate Diploma programme, the procedure is much the same as that outlined for the MSc programme. You will have to fill out either a re-enrolment form (for continuing Waikato students) or a combined application and enrolment form, along with a Departmental programme form. You should design your programme in consultation with one of the Diploma coordinators in the Department, before going on to have it formally approved by the Dean.
